Recreation Services

The Recreation Services Department offers a wide range of recreational facilities and activities in a modern, therapeutic environment and is housed mainly in the Harold Watson Activities Building. Activity choices range from highly-competitive athletics to noncompetitive sporting games and the creative arts.

Clients participate in a leisure assessment/interest inventory to help them

  • learn about the variety of activities the Rec Hall has to offer
  • explore areas of interest
  • recognize their functioning level for a variety of activities, and
  • identify awareness of community resources and how to access them
  • give feedback and suggestions to Rec staff about future programming

WWRC recreation staff promote leisure and recreation experiences as valuable dimensions of health and wellness as these apply to vocational readiness. Structured and unstructured activities are designed to offer all clients the opportunity to become involved. For clients who may benefit socially, emotionally, physically or mentally, special structured programs may be recommended and implemented on an individual or group basis.  Programming of this nature is designed to assist clients in transitioning to campus life and integrating into the evening leisure and social life.

The Recreation Services Department also provides Recreation Therapy as an ancillary service to those in the Medical Rehabilitation Program.  The Medical Recreation Therapist provides treatment opportunities which offer the client a chance to expand leisure interests with a focus on rehabilitation goals through adaptive techniques and practice.  Through this approach, the professional takes in consideration all facets of the person being physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual.

The Recreation Services Department focuses on the benefits of leisure.   The staff and client work on the soft skills such as team work, skill development, social skills, confidence, self- esteem, accepting feedback, following instructions, being on time, and communication skills. Programs are planned and implemented to meet the needs of the clients from the results of the Leisure Diagnostic Battery test and re-evaluated at the end of their program.   All progress is documented in AWARE from Wrap around support groups and the PREP Leisure Education and skill development program.
